Welsh Cookie Company

ABOUT US

“Welsh Cookies are known by many other names, including Miners Cakes or Welsh Cakes. The Welsh name for them is Pice Ar Y Maen. Generations of coal and slate miners in Wales took these nutritious “cakes” to work every day. Traditionally, Welsh Cookies contained black currants and nutmeg. Miner’s wives rolled and fried the cakes each morning much like we now make pancakes. The resulting cookie has a biscuit-like flavor and texture. I often tell people that if you combined the best characteristics of pancakes, shortbread, scones, and biscuits, the result would be a Welsh Cookie.
The InFamous Welsh Cookie Company was created by my father, David Browne, in 1994. Dad learned to make Traditional Welsh Cookies from his mother-in-law, Blodwyn Jones-Morris.
He made them for our family and friends throughout my youth. When Dad retired, he began selling his cookies at local church fairs and festivals. The positive response convinced him that there was a market for these tasty creations, and he began experimenting with different flavors.
My older brother Michael started helping expand the business in 2000, and I began helping a few years later. The three of us, with a little help from our friends, now attend over 90 festivals each year, selling happiness one cookie at a time.
In 2007, I opened a cozy coffee shop in Hornell, New York where I make my cookies and invite people to stop in for a sample. We have coffee, tea, and hot chocolate as well as Welsh Cookies, and books, magazines, and games for people to enjoy. Drop by if you are in the neighborhood!”
